Open-source driver brings Metal acceleration to RTX 5090 on macOS

A Reddit user writes up a community project: nullmoth has open-sourced a Metal driver for NVIDIA GeForce cards on macOS Sequoia. It is not a translation layer but a real Metal 3 implementation with argument buffers tier 2, ray tracing, mesh shaders and MetalFX, built on NVIDIA's own open kernel modules with a shader translator into Mesa's NVK Vulkan path. Turing and newer are supported (GTX 16, RTX 20/30/40/50 series); it is written in Rust and already has 3k+ stars.

The companion tool 1401 is Boot Camp in reverse: run the Windows app, it checks hardware, builds an OpenCore config and writes a macOS installer stick, so you can reboot into macOS on the PC you already own.

The author argues the point is a stable base for local AI agents and long-running workloads — Windows updates reboot mid-run, drivers fight, background processes get silently killed — while macOS offers Unix stability plus cheap access to a 5090. He is candid about limits: end-to-end testing is thin, with one fully validated machine (RTX 5060 on Intel Core Ultra); macOS 15 and x8664 only; OpenCore knowledge still helps on fussy boards; back up before flashing. He is waiting on an NVMe drive to test it himself.
