Four Gemini agents autonomously beat Minecraft in 27 hours, writing 2,783 programs

Google DeepMind researchers (Faldor, Singh, Raileanu) report the first end-to-end autonomous completion of Minecraft by AI agents.
- Four general-purpose Gemini 4 Argon coding agents were placed in a randomly generated survival world with one instruction: defeat the Ender Dragon. No roles were pre-assigned and no human-written game logic was used
- Each agent controlled a player via the open-source Mineflayer library, coordinating through in-game chat and shared memory; they planned, wrote and debugged every program themselves
- The team wrote 2,783 custom programs, died 605 times, and finished in 27 hours 14 minutes. A timeline chart shows the division of labor: tools/fortress, supplies and crystals, Nether portal, and the final blow
- Winning required keeping a coherent plan across thousands of dependent steps for over a day — the same long-horizon coding and multi-agent coordination demanded by real-world software engineering. The paper also covers the run's limits
