Simulated fruit fly brains learn to drive in a 24/7 racing league with Elo ratings
Pepegg2 · reddit · 2026-10-17
The author trains 2,400-neuron Drosophila brain models (based on the FlyWire connectome) with RL/evolutionary strategies—over 10 million episodes so far—to drive a car in a drag racing simulator, streamed 24/7 on Twitch as a league with Elo ratings, seasons, and weight-inheriting "dynasties." Each Grand Prix runs under varied engine/grip/wet-dry conditions, and a fly is "verified" only by cleanly finishing all scenarios. Season 11 GP86: the dry-strip record is 10.06s, and last race was won by a second-generation fly by 0.02s. Code is open-sourced on GitHub.
