Claude autonomously beats human quantum circuit designs in 53 hours, cutting gate counts up to 17x

Anthropic's STEM Fellows project gave Claude purely textual descriptions of 8 fundamental quantum circuits plus an automatic scoring program (qubits × gate count), with no human intervention. In 53 hours it beat the best published human designs on all 8 tasks.
Key breakthroughs: it derived novel algebraic identities (formalized in Lean) to build the first reversible quantum divsteps implementation without storing branch history — 1/17 the gate count with only 12% more qubits; and for Google's DQI decoder it swapped the extended Euclidean algorithm for Berlekamp-Massey, then used 403 million simulation samples to justify reserving just 19 qubits, cutting gates 12-fold.
