Andriy Burkov: the only gap between open-weight and frontier models is data quality
burkov · x · 2026-10-17
Andriy Burkov argues the only difference between proprietary frontier models and open-weight models is data quality. He contends that no matter how much RL Chinese companies apply to make their models agentic and math-capable, their output on non-agentic tasks remains largely inferior to the three US proprietary models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google — and as long as this disparity holds, business users will keep choosing proprietary models.
