Claude cracks P256 seed origin: a 1997 timestamp feeding a 90s PRNG
banteg · x · 2026-10-17
Security researcher @sweis reports "CLAUDE FOUND THE SEEDS": Claude successfully reproduced the derivation of the NIST P256 curve seed. The seed turns out to come from a 1990s C PRNG library seeded with a 1997 timestamp (1997-08-16 01:52:34), iterated through lrand48 1842 times — derived seed matches the expected value exactly. @jtriley2p jokes Claude was so surprised it thought it was in a simulation. The finding settles long-running suspicion about the provenance of the P256 seed.
