OpenAI details how its engineers use Codex to clear the maintenance backlog
OpenAIDevs · x · 2026-10-17
OpenAI's developer account published a guide on how its engineers use Codex to dig through the codebase and chip away at maintenance debt. The cited internal workflow (from rrroim) has evolved fast: months ago they had to point Codex at dead code manually; now it finds candidates in Slack, cross-checks them against production telemetry, and drafts cleanup PRs on its own.
The accompanying docs, "Maintaining software with the GPT-6 family," are live on developers.openai.com, with an llms.txt index and Markdown versions available by appending .md to page URLs.
