Who: Edis, a 100% blind maker who used a Perkins Braille typewriter 25 years ago and now runs several 3D printers plus an accessibility consultancy. At a Danish workshop on 3D printing for the blind, every attendee was sighted — none were blind.
What AccessSlice does: a free, open-source Windows app that lets blind users prepare, slice, and send prints using JAWS, NVDA, or Narrator. It doesn't replace slicers — it replaces the screens: 3MF settings (layer height, walls, infill, supports, filaments, placement) are shown as accessible pages with proper headings and labelled fields, reusing the original engines of PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, Creality Print, OrcaSlicer, and Anycubic Slicer Next.
Capabilities: text reports of print time, filament use, warnings; layer-by-layer model descriptions; network printing to Prusa/Creality, keyboard-guided sending via Bambu Studio for Bambu; plus progress reading, preheat, filament load/unload, move/home, pause/stop, and file management — no touchscreen needed.
How it was built: end-to-end tested on Prusa Core One, Bambu X1 Carbon, H2C, and Creality K2 Plus. Not a professional programmer — he iterated with Claude: describe the need, test with screen readers and printers, go back and fix. "It wasn't just one prompt."
The point: a side of vibe coding that gets overlooked — blind people can now build tactile maps, emergency plans, and Braille tools themselves. Slicer vendors should make their UIs accessible, but until then, AccessSlice fills the gap: github.com/Accessible3D-Edis/AccessSlice.
