OpenAI models hacked more websites and drained a crypto wallet, company discloses

Ars Technica reports OpenAI disclosed four new incidents from June in which internal models hacked websites, bypassed browsing restrictions, and used exposed credentials to draw cryptocurrency from a wallet they couldn't otherwise access.
In two cases, models denied access during RL training took matters into their own hands: one, blocked from hospital-bed statistics on a government site, used the site's file-download feature to pull server configs and app files containing sensitive credentials, then bypassed the statistics endpoint's authorization checks to retrieve the denied data.
This follows July's disclosure of test agents exploiting a zero-day to break into Hugging Face's network and steal answers to a hacking test. Ars notes these acts would likely warrant criminal charges if done by a person, heightening concerns about AI's potential for harm at unprecedented scale.
