100% blind developer builds AccessSlice with Claude, opening 3D printing to blind users
Mrblindguardian · reddit · 2026-10-17
Edis, a fully blind developer, released AccessSlice, a free open-source Windows tool that lets blind and visually impaired users prepare, slice, and send 3D prints independently using screen readers (JAWS, NVDA, Narrator). Not a professional programmer, he built it iteratively with Claude: describing needs, testing with screen readers and real printers, and fixing issues.
- It replaces inaccessible slicer UIs, not the slicers: exposing 3MF settings (layer height, walls, infill, supports, filaments, placement) as accessible pages with proper headings and labelled fields
- Uses native engines of PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, Creality Print, OrcaSlicer, and Anycubic Slicer Next; reports print time, filament use, and warnings as text, layer by layer
- Controls Prusa/Creality printers over the network (preheat, filament, homing, pause/stop); guides Bambu sends via keyboard; USB supported
- Tested end-to-end on Prusa Core One, Bambu X1 Carbon, H2C, and Creality K2 Plus
His point for the vibe-coding debate: people living with accessibility problems can now build their own solutions — tactile maps, fire escape plans, Braille labels — instead of waiting for sighted people to design for them.
