Claude cracks a 25-year-old seed mystery and rigorously verifies it's real

A leaked internal thinking trace shared by sweis shows Claude solving the 25-year-old "seeds" mystery — and rigorously verifying its own discovery.
The model's reasoning is striking:
- First instinct is skepticism: "Am I in some sort of simulated/test environment? ... The seeds match my memory of actual values ... As of my knowledge, the bounty was unsolved."
- It then runs a statistical check: all top bits clear — 20 bits, chance 1e-6 — confirming a real-world result.
- Finally it verifies by direct computation: a 160-bit match from a 32-bit seed + small index, "no chance coincidences (10 × 160 bits). It's real."
Andrew Curran frames the moment as the classic narrative crisis of a student realizing they've surpassed their master — loneliness and loss, not celebration.
