ChatGPT desktop bug rewrites 385MB every 20 seconds, potentially wearing out your SSD
mark_k · x · 2026-10-17
Developer markk found that the ChatGPT desktop app causes constant SSD activity whenever running: the animated desktop Pet triggers a full rewrite of the 1MB app state file and its backup about 10 times per second — 385MB of writes in just 20 seconds, all just to persist state changes. The unnecessary wear has been flagged to OpenAI.
