ChatGPT desktop Pet rewrites 385MB every 20 seconds, needlessly wearing out user SSDs
mark_k · x · 2026-10-17
Developer markk traced constant SSD activity in the ChatGPT desktop app to its animated desktop Pet: the app rewrites the entire 1MB app state file plus its backup about 10 times per second — 385MB of writes in 20 seconds, just to persist the Pet's position.
Leaving the app running all day adds up to significant unnecessary SSD wear. Setting Pet to "None" stops the activity immediately; desktop users should check this setting.
