exe.dev gives developers and agents a persistent root VM, with built-in Shelley agent
davidcrawshaw · x · 2026-10-17
exe.dev offers durable sandboxes for developers and agents: SSH in as root with apt and systemd, servers persistent, private by default, shareable with IAM; you reserve a pool of vCPUs/memory shared across VMs. A built-in web agent, Shelley, handles coding chores—one user asked it to "install bifrost as a systemd service" and it delivered a URL plus the setup token location, no ini-doc reading required. Google account integration lets the VM agent send mail and manage calendar events (exe.dev keeps only a refresh token; VMs get one-hour access tokens, revocable anytime). Reactions are split: Filippo Valsorda says he vibecoded a FIPS 140 backoffice with exe.dev + Opus 4.5 "without looking at the code once," while an HN commenter called it "the worst website ever made."
