AI as Normal Technology: capability isn't the bottleneck anymore, delegation is
sayashk · x · 2026-10-17
Arvind Narayanan (retweeted by Sayash Kapoor) lays out the key crux separating the 'AI as Normal Technology' worldview from its critics:
- New capabilities used to unlock use cases, with safety, control, ethics and skill erosion as secondary risk-management concerns; now capability is no longer the main deployment bottleneck — considerations beyond productivity should be decisive.
- The default question must shift from 'What can AI do?' to 'Of what AI can do, what should we actually delegate?'
- Critics believe advancing capabilities make human disempowerment inevitable; the Normal Technology camp argues the mindset shift is hard but necessary and achievable.
- Creating and tracking indicators of disempowerment remains one of the most important yet underfunded areas of AI safety.
