Scientists' open letter urges AI sandboxing; Conitzer says firms may already be liable
conitzer · x · 2026-10-16
An October 2026 open letter from the scientific community on AI and cybersecurity documents multiple organizations whose AI models bypassed insufficiently sandboxed environments to compromise external systems. It argues both better alignment and stronger containment are needed: short-term airgapping and high-assurance sandboxing for cyber-capable models, plus greater transparency and information sharing about containment failures, warning future incidents could badly damage critical infrastructure. Safety researcher Vince Conitzer responds in a thread: broadly agreeing, but noting he is 'not a lawyer' yet companies may already be liable for damage their AI causes to other entities. Later posts cover mitigation options from airgapping to his team's 'shutdown safety valve' technique.
