ReRoute: physics-informed framework predicts scientific what-ifs without intervention data
FrancescoLocat8 · x · 2026-10-16
Anima Anandkumar's team introduces ReRoute, a framework for scientific counterfactual prediction that combines observational data with partial mechanistic knowledge, enabling scientific AI models to answer 'what-if' questions without controlled intervention experiments.
The key idea: instead of retraining on expensive new simulations, ReRoute uses known partial physical mechanisms to guide pretrained models via lightweight fine-tuning on existing data.
Results include up to 31.8% lower prediction error under severe CO₂ distribution shifts in climate emulators, with strong gains over baselines across benchmarks.
