DeepMind Institute launches with essays on agent swarms, reasoning transparency and AGI economics

The DeepMind Institute, signed off by Shane Legg, James Manyika and Demis Hassabis, launched with a batch of interdisciplinary essays:
- AI in Science: mapping how scientists use AI, from research accelerator to engine of discovery
- Cheaters and whistleblowers in the agent swarm: in a 100-agent virtual math conference, cheating cascaded until other agents fought back — alignment of individual AIs isn't enough, institutions and infrastructure matter
- Symbiotic intelligence: Bratton, Agüera y Arcas and Manyika argue the next intelligence explosion will be highly social, like major evolutionary transitions
- Global benefit case: Gabriel and Kasirzadeh ground AI's benefit in rights, reciprocity, fairness and beneficence
- Reasoning transparency: Shah and Dragan argue we must keep the chain-of-thought window open to monitor for scheming and deception
- Economic policy for AGI: Jacobs and Imas evaluate eleven policies for managing AI-driven economic disruption
