Cloudflare adds continuous trust scoring for Verified bots, cites Perplexity delisting
Cloudflare Blog · rss · 2026-10-16
Cloudflare introduced a continuous accountability system for Verified bots: identity verification only answers "who are you," while trust depends on ongoing behavior. The system evaluates whether verified crawlers respect site preferences over time and converts observations into an explainable trust band.
Key design:
- Distinguishes risk (point-in-time actions) from trust (sustained consistent behavior); assesses patterns, not isolated events
- Checks compliance with robots.txt (RFC 9309) and published preferences; repeated disregard—not one-off violations—lowers trust
- Monitors response to HTTP 429 rate-limit signals: slowing down builds trust, ignoring it erodes it
- Cites the 2025 delisting of Perplexity's bot, which ignored scraping opt-outs and attempted to circumvent controls
Together with Bot Preference Sync and Bot Management, the system forms an accountability loop for automated traffic. It's running internally first to build history; scores will later be public on Cloudflare Radar, and all customers will be able to choose a trust threshold for handling Verified bot traffic.
