Celebrity AI Deepfakes Rack Up Millions of Views as Verified Fan Accounts Spread Fakes

The Verge reports that AI-generated photos and videos of celebrities are racking up millions of views on social media.
A key case: an Instagram account @miagoth with over a million followers and a blue verified checkmark posted an AI-generated image of actress Mia Goth wearing a T-shirt reading "MY EX IS MY BIGGEST FAN," set to Beyoncé's "Single Ladies." The post drew nearly 500,000 likes within days, including from entertainment industry peers, despite the page being labeled a fan account. Goth's representative said they had previously complained to Instagram about the account posting "counterfeit, AI images" of the actress.
The core issue: Meta allows users to purchase blue verified checkmarks even when an account is not run by a prominent figure or official page. Goth's representative Christine Tripicchio called it "disconcerting on a fundamental level" that a fan account meets Instagram's criteria for a blue check.
