Interpretability Isn't Enough: Debunkers Clash With AI Doomers Over Safety Barriers
basedjensen · x · 2026-10-16
A debate on X over whether solving interpretability makes AI safe. @GroundhogStrat argues even solved interpretability wouldn't eliminate catastrophic risk — civil engineering is mature yet bridges still collapse, and a fully interpretable AI could still make a catastrophic mistake in, say, a bio lab. Interpretability also cuts both ways: bad actors could exploit it, not just 'good actors' removing dangerous behaviors. Replying, @basedjensen claims doomers treat any progress challenging their narrative as a direct threat because their livelihoods depend on dooming. The crux: whether interpretability progress is being unfairly dismissed or doomers are goalpost-moving.
