Coordinate parallel Claude Code sessions with git notes as a shared timeline
Commercial_Base488 · reddit · 2026-10-16
The author runs several Claude Code sessions in parallel (one per project plus reviewer sessions) and found inter-session status messages wasteful, late, and duplicated. The fix: each session writes what it did as a git note (git notes --ref=timeline append), and on startup a SessionStart hook runs a 40-line Python script that merges commits and notes across repos into one time-sorted list, injecting the last 20 lines into context.
Key details:
- git config notes.displayRef refs/notes/timeline to surface notes in git log
- Script uses git log --branches --tags instead of --all to avoid noise from the notes ref's own commits
- A CLAUDE.md rule: check the timeline before starting, leave a note when done or handing off, send a direct message only for urgent requests
- Benefits: status pings mostly gone, duplicate work detectable, survives compaction/restarts (timeline lives in git, not session context), zero extra infrastructure
- Caveats: notes don't push by default (git push origin refs/notes/ needed); keep startup output short to save tokens
