Alibaba open-sources OpenGCUA, a full-stack generalist computer-use agent; +19.6 points on OSWorld-v2 across 8 models

Alibaba's Tongyi-MAI team released OpenGCUA, an ongoing project to open the full stack for generalist computer-use agents (GCUA), with the first release including code, a project website, and an interactive lab.
Key ideas: the model chooses how to observe and act across visual and programmatic interfaces; code execution lets intermediate results drive subsequent operations, reusing the model's existing programming skills; and "harness-to-model decision transfer" moves observation and task-state decisions from fixed harness rules into the model itself.
On OSWorld-v2, the full configuration improves task scores across all eight evaluated models — including GPT-6 Astra and Claude Opus 5 — raising mean partial score by +19.6 points and cutting reported steps per task by 53.0% on average. It's positioned as an open counterpart to closed frontier systems.
