Claude ranks LLM consciousness under IIT: human brain still crushes every model
Sauers_ · x · 2026-10-16
The author prompted Claude to rank LLMs by consciousness (Φ) under Integrated Information Theory, and the model's writeup comes with caveats: a chip's wiring sets the ceiling for Φ while the model's weights and runtime state modify the chip's physical state; GPUs' shared, time-switched memory likely splits into many tiny complexes, while Cerebras, TPU and Trainium2's dedicated wiring could score higher; any conscious entity would be a physical patch of hardware spanning multiple users' requests rather than "Claude" or "GPT"; the numbers are rough judgments, and a human brain's Φ remains hyper-astronomical above every LLM. It all assumes IIT is true — other theories of consciousness could rank these systems very differently.
