Anthropic built its own Git replacement Scion with Claude, cutting CPU and memory ~200x
Pavan_Belagatti · x · 2026-10-16
- Anthropic used Claude to build Scion, its own version control system, and migrated its monorepo off Git after daily merged changes grew from 2,500 in May to over 30,000 by September, making source control the bottleneck.
- Key difference: Git assumes developers hold full repo copies and work offline, but today many users are always-online AI agents and CI jobs. Scion keeps history on the server; clients download only needed files and commit directly without push.
- Reported results: 200x less CPU and memory than the old mirroring setup, with checkouts dropping from minutes to seconds.
