Only 4.5% of US consumers pay for AI, but the top 1% of spenders drive 19.5% of revenue

An analysis of a16z and market data argues subscriptions aren't the only path for AI apps: while nearly half of US consumers have used AI, only 4.5% had a paid ChatGPT/Gemini/Claude subscription as of August (up from 2.1% a year earlier).
- Extreme head concentration: the top 10% of spenders generate half of all AI spending; the top 1% alone accounts for 19.5%, more than the bottom 50% combined. They average $903/month (up 80% in 18 months), vs. a $25 median — paying mainly for coding, automation, and content tools.
- Current mix: of 44 AI-native products on a16z's list, 84% use subscriptions, 64% sell usage/credits, 14% run ads.
- Advertising rising: ChatGPT ads hit a $1B annualized run rate with 1.2B weekly users; doctor-focused OpenEvidence also monetizes via ads, reportedly used by 50–60% of US doctors.
- Transaction fees ahead: AI agents booking flights or shopping could earn commissions; shopping, travel, finance, jobs and other categories still lack a dominant AI product in the Top 100.
Takeaway: subscriptions suit frequent-use tools, ads serve free users, and transaction fees fit agentic purchases — while businesses must make pricing, reviews, and product data legible to AI to stay in the consideration set.
