Yacine reverses single-GPU training advice: go train compute-hungry mega models
yacineMTB · x · 2026-10-16
Well-known AI developer Yacine MTB publicly reversed his earlier advice that AI researchers should take the "ETH Zurich route" — training tiny models on a single GPU in under a minute (citing Pufferlib), on the theory that more training runs means more learning.
His new take: don't bother. Instead, he says, use mega huge computers and "boil a few large ponds over weeks to months" training neural networks so massive that the electrons trapped in the NVMe storage literally add measurable physical mass. The flip-flop captures the ongoing debate between fast small-model iteration and brute-force compute scaling in research.
