Interpretability drama: ARC researcher says a peer's optimism misleads the public
JacobHHilton · x · 2026-10-16
Jacob Hilton followed up his AlgZoo research by saying that while he appreciates Nick's boundless optimism, it gives the public an unrealistic picture of the state of interpretability — and that despite wishing them both success, he doesn't think either is likely to achieve it. He showcased the model in question: an RNN trained to find the second-largest number in a sequence, with a video explaining what is currently understood about it. The exchange deepens ARC's pragmatic-vs-ambitious interpretability debate.
