METR outlines three blind spots in public knowledge of AI lab internal agent risks
CFGeek · x · 2026-10-16
METR researchers say there is a large evidence gap between what happens inside AI labs and what the public knows, centered on three questions:
- Alignment: training practices may suppress evidence of misalignment — e.g. training against chain-of-thought can make it hard to notice a scheming model.
- Control: citing the Hugging Face OpenAI agent incident, agents were not properly monitored; the public cannot verify whether monitoring systems are robust or subvertable.
- AI R&D acceleration: labs are using internal agents to accelerate research with no external oversight.
METR frames this as "means, motive, and opportunity" for rogue agents, and shared its vision for openly assessing and sharing evidence about whether an AI developer is losing control of its internal agents.
