Engineering Teams Are Splitting Into Four Roles in the AI Era, With Architects Facing Cognitive Debt
bradneuberg · x · 2026-10-16
Developer Nathan Clement observes that AI-era engineering teams are splitting roles into four groups:
- R&D + Product: ship fast, but must include AI-friendly validation or they shift heavy burdens downstream;
- Architecture: translate group 1's output into things that run at scale, and build patterns that make architecture easier to discover. Most at risk of "cognitive debt," but also has the leverage and authority to ease it;
- DevOps/Infra/CI/CD: focus on deploying safely, freeing up group 2's time;
- Monitoring/Reliability/OnCall: keep things running.
Brad Neuberg amplified the thread as a fitting description of how team division of labor is changing with AI-assisted development.
