Stanford AI Lab shared new work by Kumbong Hermann, Ishan Khare and team introducing Next-Concept Modeling (NCM), a coarse-to-fine parallel text generation paradigm where models write like humans think: rough sketch first, details last.
Key results vs diffusion LLMs of similar size:
- Up to 31x faster generation on downstream tasks like summarization and machine translation, with comparable or better quality
- 10–21x faster unconditional generation on TinyStories, LM1B, and OpenWebText, with comparable generative perplexity and 3–5x fewer training tokens
- Better performance on reasoning tasks like Sudoku than both AR and diffusion baselines, using fewer sampling steps
