Google's Willow chip cuts quantum errors 40x, raising Q-Day concerns for Bitcoin
jamestagg · x · 2026-10-16
Google's "magic state cultivation" technique now works on its Willow chip, cutting errors about 40x with a record 99.99% accuracy. Q-Day is when quantum computers can break the cryptography protecting Bitcoin wallets; Google's 2025 estimate for cracking RSA with under a million qubits uses the same technique. The research is published in Science, though Google says it still needs to prove the technique scales.
