Vibe Coding a Data Pipeline Is Easy; Running It at Billions of Rows Is Not
Zachly · x · 2026-10-16
AI can generate an ETL pipeline in minutes, but making it reliably process billions of records is a different beast. An engineer lays out eight knowledge areas vibe coders must learn:
- Ingestion: batch vs streaming, CDC, incremental loads, idempotency, late-arriving data
- Modeling & storage: star schemas, SCDs, partitioning, columnar formats, lakehouses
- Distributed processing: data skew, broadcast/sort-merge joins, predicate pushdown, adaptive query execution
- Orchestration & reliability: DAGs, retries with exponential backoff, idempotency, backfills, SLAs
- Streaming: watermarks, windowing, exactly-once semantics, checkpointing, backpressure
- Quality & governance: data contracts, schema evolution, lineage, PII handling
- Performance & cost: warehouse sizing, caching, materialized views, cost attribution
- Deployment & observability: CI/CD, IaC, data reconciliation, quality alerts
His takeaway: writing SQL and Python is getting cheaper while data engineering judgment grows more valuable—the future belongs to engineers who understand distributed systems and leverage AI, not vibe coders vs data engineers.
