Meta's Omnilingual ASR has been named one of TIME's Best Inventions of 2026.
- The open-source model suite provides speech recognition for over 1,600 languages, including 500 low-coverage languages never served by any prior ASR system.
- Paired with Meta's Omnilingual Machine Translation, transcripts can be translated across 1,600+ languages.
- Lead researcher Jean Maillard says the goal is making technology support as many languages as possible; Nigerian health practitioners already use it in community clinics.
