MIT's Sustainable Supply Chain Lab published its 2026 report surveying 1,810 professionals across 91 countries:
- Record commitment, lagging governance: 83% rate sustainability as important to long-term success (a seven-year high), yet only 51% have formal cross-functional sustainability teams and 33% place oversight at board level. Firms with such teams embed sustainability into decisions 57% of the time vs. 13% when responsibility sits in one function.
- AI cuts both ways: 78% of North American organizations use AI in sustainability initiatives; 87% of adopters report positive impact (86% cut material waste, 81% cut energy). But among mature agentic AI users, only 53% saw total GHG emissions fall, while 29% saw increases. Of advanced AI warehouses, 78% report higher energy use and 76% higher waste, with only 24% using AI-driven real-time environmental monitoring.
- External pressure: 68% delayed or scaled back sustainability strategies due to tariff uncertainty; 83% say geopolitical conflict undermines climate action. 84% of European freight firms see policy helping decarbonization vs. 44% in North America.
- Scope 3 collaboration surges: participation in joint supplier decarbonization programs jumped from 31% to 58% in one year; those working entirely alone collapsed from 18% to 6%.
