Flux 3 Klein tested: distilled is 6x faster than base with near-identical quality
Kandoo85 · reddit · 2026-10-16
A Redditor benchmarked Flux 3 Klein bf16 base vs distilled on an RTX A4500 (20GB) with 50 same-seed prompts and official ComfyUI workflows: base 50 steps/CFG 3.5, distilled 15 steps/CFG 1.
- Speed: 148s vs 24s per image; 50 images took 2 hours vs 22 minutes, with quality hard to tell apart on most prompts
- Text rendering is strong in both: Chinese/Japanese signs, VISIT MARS, a euro-price chalkboard all correct; only a neon HOTEL sign failed in both
- Base wins on tricky prompts (robbers with rubber old-man masks — distilled produced four real creepy old dudes); counting is still weak (7 elephants → 6 and 5)
- Distilled is more restrictive; base is more permissive for artistic NSFW and better for finetunes/LoRAs
- Tip: writing prompts in the upsampler's caption style (medium, framing, people, background, light, quoted text) makes a big difference over short prompts
- Verdict: distilled for daily use, base as a foundation
