Stanford's Next-Concept Modeling sketches text first, 21x faster generation on one H100
lmoroney · x · 2026-10-16
Stanford's Hazy Research team proposes Next-Concept Modeling (NCM), challenging token-by-token generation. A multiscale tokenizer encodes text as a hierarchy of discrete codes; a transformer generates level by level, predicting all codes in a level in parallel.
- On a single H100: 21x faster generation on LM1B and 10x on OpenWebText vs. the strongest diffusion LM baselines, with similar or better quality; 31x faster on XSum at matched ROUGE-L
- Training uses 4-5x fewer tokens; NCM beats both autoregressive and diffusion baselines on Sudoku
- Code, checkpoints, and datasets are public; the author suggests a translation demo for teaching coarse-to-fine generation
