Anthropic ditched Git as agents pushed merges to 30,000 a day, up 10x in 4 months
shashib · x · 2026-10-16
Anthropic revealed in its Oct 13 engineering post "Redesigning source control at Anthropic" that it stopped using Git as AI agents transformed its source-control workload.
Key figures (Anthropic-reported, not independently audited):
- 30,000+ merges per day in September 2026, up from 2,500 in May — a 10x jump in four months
- 25M code checkouts per day for CI; naive fetching would mean 600 PB of daily Git traffic
- The replacement has a footprint 200x smaller than the old Git mirror fleet
The core argument: Git assumes offline developers syncing a few times a day, while nearly all of Anthropic's clients are always-online agents and automated jobs. The piece walks through where Git broke and what replaced it, and forecasts that companies using AI coding tools will hit the same wall within 6-12 months.
