Sundar Pichai announced that Google's Android Earthquake Alerts System, launched in 2021, has sent over 1 billion alerts and is expanding from 98 to nearly 200 countries and regions.
He cited this year's devastating earthquakes in Venezuela, where millions of people outside the epicenter received alerts and took cover before shaking began. The system turns Android phones' accelerometers into a planet-wide seismic detection network.
