Anthropic Dropped Git After Merges Hit 30,000 a Day
shashib · x · 2026-10-15
Anthropic published an engineering post, "Redesigning source control at Anthropic," on October 13 explaining why it retired Git and what replaced it.
- Merges hit 30,000+ per day in September 2026, up from about 2,500 in May — more than a tenfold rise in four months.
- Continuous integration requires 25M code checkouts per day; fetched the naive way, that would mean 600 PB of daily Git traffic.
- The new system has a 200x smaller footprint than the old Git mirror fleet.
The post explains Git's core assumption: every developer holds a complete copy of the repository and its history, which suits humans working offline and syncing a few times a day. Anthropic's clients are almost entirely agents and automated jobs that are online by definition and each still needs code, breaking that assumption. Anthropic expects other companies using AI coding tools to hit the same wall within six to 12 months. All figures are reported by Anthropic and not independently audited.
