alex_verem · x · 2026-10-15
The open-source team that rebuilt Photoshop in Rust (3,500 → 60,000+ stars) is now taking on Microsoft Office. WordCraft rebuilds Word, GridCraft rebuilds Excel and DeckCraft rebuilds PowerPoint; WordCraft alone pulled 12,000 stars in a week.
Highlights:
- Full .docx read/write, so documents stay compatible with Word users
- Ribbon UI, styles, tables, track changes and mail merge all in place
- Runs on Mac, Windows, Linux and in the browser
- AI agents like Claude can drive it and edit documents like a human would
- No subscription, fully open source
"This is how big software gets replaced — someone rebuilds it in the open and gives it away."
