Arvind Narayanan lays out research agenda to steer AI from automation toward augmenting humans
random_walker · x · 2026-10-15
Princeton's Arvind Narayanan and Gabriel Unger published a new essay responding to widespread frustration with the AI industry's "automate everything" agenda, proposing a research agenda for collaborative, augmentative AI. Their thesis: automation-first AI dominance stems not just from economic incentives but from deep cultural issues in computer science itself — which can be changed. They sketch four research directions the automation paradigm largely ignores, and advocate elevating HCI and Human-Centered AI in status, influence and funding, plus reforming AI curricula to re-center the human role.
