404 Media reports on the creepy side of ChatGPT's ad targeting: advertisers — or really anyone with five minutes to spare — can inject ads into a user's ChatGPT session based on their phone number or email address. The reporter tested the system by placing his own ad without using anyone's personal data. Most ChatGPT users seeing an ad likely have no idea someone uploaded their phone number into OpenAI's systems. The same newsletter covers new research confirming, apparently for the first time, that online ads are being used to deliver zero-click mercenary malware against targets.
