Sakana AI's Agentic Scientist orchestrates coding agents for research, lands ALIFE 2026 paper

Sakana AI (David Ha's team) released The Agentic Scientist, an end-to-end distributed pipeline pairing human researchers with modern coding agents for computational research.
Design
- Decomposes research into four stages: task setup, parallel investigation (a pool of worker agents for ideation and sandboxed experiments), evidence generation (baselines/ablations, multi-seed metric comparisons, post-hoc analysis), and paper writing (planning → writing → review agent chain)
- Each step runs on headless coding agents with agentic self-verification; a meta-controller manages parallel research agents and enforces rubric checks at every stage
- The orchestration layer is reusable across domains and spans a spectrum of autonomy, from co-scientist tool to fully autonomous discovery
Results
- A paper written with a development version of the system was accepted as a main-conference talk at ALIFE 2026 after human verification and edits
- Fully autonomous runs cover ML open problems, including a hypernetwork-based inductive bias for rapid Transformer adaptation and a meta-trained evolution strategy matching or beating CMA-ES on 5 of 7 unseen Brax control tasks
- Ablations suggest reliable scientific autonomy depends on the cross-agent orchestration layer, not just base model capability
Code and the AutoIllustrate figure tool are open-sourced.
