Claude Opus cracks Super Mario 64's 30-year courtyard plaque mystery
decorator · reddit · 2026-10-15
A Redditor used Claude Opus 5.5 to decode Mario 64's illegible 32×32 courtyard plaque, debated since the '90s. The approach: model how a 1996 artist made the texture (font → canvas → resize → blur → stone), GPU-search fonts/sizes/kerning/words, run a K-best DP dictionary search over 17.7k words, and validate with simulated plaques to measure false-positive rates. Along the way Opus produced a word-gap bug and an overclaimed capital-S finding, proving strict held-out testing mattered most. Verdict: "Eternal Star / We hope so" in Adobe's 1990 Palatino Bold Italic. 40-page LaTeX report and code are open source.
