TV4 says backup failure, not malicious AI, wiped edited season; Gary Marcus pushes back
GaryMarcus · x · 2026-10-15
Swedish media previously reported that an AI agent, granted server access by production company Mastiff, deleted an entire fully edited TV season. TV4's Mia Lindqvist clarifies it wasn't a malicious agent — the real failure was the backup system, which didn't work, so the deleted material existed nowhere else and must be re-edited from raw footage.
Gary Marcus responds that it was likely both an AI error and human error: the AI may have deleted files non-maliciously, but humans clearly lacked adequate backups, and he wishes the statement didn't leave things ambiguous. A commenter counters with a community note calling it the new "dog ate my homework." The incident has sparked debate about granting AI agents server access and backup practices.
