Google SynthID named TIME Best Invention, watermarking 180B+ images and videos
GoogleDeepMind · x · 2026-10-15
Google DeepMind's SynthID AI-content watermark was named one of TIME's Best Inventions of 2026, with over 180 billion images and videos already watermarked.
- Watermarks are imperceptible pixel perturbations that survive cropping, compression, and editing.
- Adopted by OpenAI, Nvidia, and Kakao, with Apple coming soon.
- Google launched a public website in October where anyone can check content for SynthID.
- DeepMind's Pushmeet Kohli argues watermarks beat detection as neural networks will eventually be unable to tell real from synthetic media.
