AReA paper: training-free trick scales DiT image generation to 6× resolution, 3.2× faster

A University of Toronto team published AReA (Adaptive Receptive-Field Attention), a training-free attention scheme that lets Diffusion Transformers generate images far beyond their training resolution.
- Diagnosis: uniform full attention causes both quadratic cost at high resolution and out-of-distribution behavior (structural distortion, degraded detail) as relative distances exceed the training range.
- Key observation: attention's effective receptive field narrows during denoising — global in early structure-forming steps, local in later detail-refining steps.
- Method: early steps apply cross-scale coarse attention over downsampled keys/values for global context; later steps apply local attention within progressively shrinking windows.
- Results: with no extra parameters or training, AReA consistently beats training-free SOTA baselines across models and resolutions, reaching up to 6× native resolution and 3.2× speedup.
Paper, project page, and Hugging Face resources are all public.
