Linus Torvalds: rules banning AI coding tools are "utterly stupid" and "idiotic"
MickeySteamboat · x · 2026-10-15
Linus Torvalds came out strongly in favor of AI coding tools, calling rules that ban them "utterly stupid" and "idiotic." For the Linux kernel, he said, "we're not going to make stupid rules that say 'you can't use tools for X'" — comparing AI bans to forbidding compilers or text editors and demanding developers prove they can do everything by hand. What matters, he argued, is understanding your code, not which tools wrote it — and the intelligent people he respects are precisely those who embrace new tools. A powerful rejection of anti-AI gatekeeping from one of the most influential programmers alive.
