Schmidt Sciences announced $10 million in grants to 19 interdisciplinary teams applying AI to the humanities: reconstructing Rome's shattered marble map from 226 AD, analyzing sperm whale calls for vowels and regional accents, and studying why some societies endured climate stress while others starved.
Selected from 501 proposals across 42 countries, all projects will open-source their code, model weights and benchmark datasets. The award brings the Humanities and AI Virtual Institute's total funding over two years to more than $21 million.
